From the CEO - "I will not disappoint you."
I wanted to be VERY intentional when designing the color way for Oya. It couldn't just be colors thrown on, but representing her skin tone as well as her overall look very important to me.
Black women are not well represented in the footwear industry nor in our cultural history with intent and purposely. Just the basic topical obligatory information which most times is whitewashed.
My mother and sisters have beautiful black skin and they are strong black women as is Oya. - RP
Ọya (Yoruba: Ọya, also known as Oyá or Oiá; Yansá or Yansã; and Iansá or Iansã in Latin America) is an orisha of winds, lightning, and violent storms, death and rebirth. She is similar to the Haitian god Maman Brigitte, who is syncretised with the Catholic Saint Brigit.
In Yoruba, the name Oya means "she tore." She is known as Ọya-Iyansan – the "mother of nine" — because of 9 children she gave birth to all of them being stillborn; suffering from lifetime of barrenness. She is the patron of the Niger River (known to the Yoruba as the Odo-Ọya)
In Candomblé, Oya is known as Oiá, lyá Mésàn, or most commonly, Iansã, from the Yoruba Yánsán. Iansã, as in Yoruba religion, commands winds, storms, and lightning. She is the queen of the river Niger, and the mother of nine. She is a warrior and is unbeatable.
